Biography
Nita Hight is a Dallas native and the team’s “research guru,” possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of case law and statutes. The team can always count on her to offer nuanced analysis and brilliant insight, and of course, the occasional witty quip.
Nita is not only committed to justice, but also insatiably intellectually curious. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Baylor University with a minor in Forensic Science, in addition to participating in moot court. Nita completed a thesis entitled Legislating Marriage: A Constitutional Examination of Same-Sex Marriage, as a student of the Baylor Honors College. Nita then obtained a Masters of Science in English from Texas A&M University Commerce before completing her law degree at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. Nita continued her participation in moot court during law school.
Nita enjoyed the great honor of serving as a research assistant for leading LGBTQ+ scholar, Professor Dale Carpenter. She also participated in the VanSickle Family Law Clinic and W.W. Caruth, Jr., Child Advocacy Clinic during law school. Nita focused her interested not only on family law, but more broadly on LGBTQ+ rights, religious freedom, freedom of speech, and freedom of association.
Nita’s ultimate interest in family law centers around appellate law. Nita contributes to the development of each client’s case by ensuring that evidence and legal argument are thoroughly prepared for the possibility of appeal. Nita understands that the legislative process often reacts to social progress, creating novel issues of law upon which the Texas Family Code is silent. Whenever the answers are unclear, Nita formulates clever, creative argument to pursue fairness and justice for her clients.
